According to analytics firm Canalys, the top three smartphone manufacturers in 2022 remained the same as the previous year. In the smartphone market, Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi continued to lead, respectively. But the overall market shrank 11 percent, with fewer than 1.2 billion smartphones sold.

During the fourth quarter of 2022, Apple outsold its competitors by achieving a 25% market share. Samsung also gained more traction with their sales and saw an increase in their market share to 22%. Xiaomi’s numbers dropped from 14% to 13%, but Oppo and Vivo still managed to make a mark despite dropping from 11% to 9%.

Smartphone Sales Below Expected

Smartphone sales remained lower compared to the previous year. Le Xuan Chiew, a research Analyst at Canalys, who conducted the research, assumes that manufacturers will take more cautious steps in 2023 by prioritizing profitability and protecting market share.

Smartphone sales figures in 2022 are as follows:

  • Samsung: 264 million (22%)
  • Apple: 228 million (19%)
  • Xiaomi: 156 million (13%)
  • Oppo: 108 million (9%)
  • Vivo: 108 million (9%)

Le Xuan Chiew explains, “Manufacturers are reducing costs to adapt to the new market realities. Tough market conditions can lead to difficult negotiations for both partners and vendors. That’s why building strong partnerships will be important to maintain their market share.”
